Gender, race, and nationality all play a huge part in how these displays of emotion are received. Russian girls competing in gymnastics are often characterized as being poor sports or divas when they cry at competition and their expressions of emotion are always contrasted against the ‘poised’ [white] gymnasts from the US. It would be really interesting to look at the constructions and perceptions of femininity as they vary from sport to sport on the international stage.

Not sure what sports you’ve been watching but, I’m pretty sure throwing a fit and crying when you lose is still bad sportsmanship.
The girls didn’t throw a fit though. They just cried and I don’t blame them. They were so nervous that they made a few mistakes in their routines and they lost their chance to win gold in the biggest sporting championship in the world.
Calling an emotional breakdown bad sportsmanship isn’t right in my opinion.
These girls train from the time they can walk. Eight hours a day, seven days a week. Their whole lives are leading up to this. And then it just falls apart right in front of them. So yeah, I think their tears are justified.
As for bad sportsmanship, Aliya has had nothing but good things to say about her competitors. They were crying because they were upset for losing, but they do not in any way have bad sportsmanship.
